Advocacy and settlement support

AKO has been advocating Karen refugee's issues and struggles to Australia, both locally and at a federal level. Resettlement of Karen refugees to Australia is proposed through the humanitarian and refugee program. The majority of Karen refugees have arrived to Australia with visa class 202, 200 and 204.

AKO assisted the new arrival, especially with visa class 202, with initial settlement needs, such as: meeting new arrivals at the airport, registering with Centrelink and Medicare, school enrolments, assisting with temporary and permanent accommodations, connecting with the local community groups and using public transport. AKO also assisted with ongoing needs such as, issues with utilities bills, real-estate agents, banking, liaising with school, health services and legal services.
