As a small community, Karen people are aware of the importance of maintaining their language and literacy. Karen elders found it very difficult to learn English, while young people are learning the language rapidly.

English has even become their native tongue. Keeping our culture and language alive will reinforce our children's identity. Children benefit from learning to value their roots and their culture. Children need to be taught to embrace their differences and uniqueness while proudly own their Karen identity.

AKO has been encouraging parents to teach the Karen language. Karen classes have been organised on the summer holiday, however, the AKO committees are now trying to change Karen class to every week. During the year, teachers would volunteer from the community to make this change possible.
