The 28th Karen Youth Organisation (KYO) Day was celebrated in Queensland on 20 May 2017. The event was organised by AKO's youth members in Queensland, with the support of AKO's Queensland branch. The celebration is held at a different venue each year; this year it took place at the Stafford Community Centre, with about 100 people of all ages attending.
KYO Day marks the founding of the Karen Youth Organisation on 23 May 1989. The KYO was formed to respond to the needs of young Karen people and to equip them, through democratic leadership and social and economic development, to contribute to their community.
Leaders from AKO's Queensland branch attended. A letter for the occasion from the KYO's headquarters was read by a young member of the community, followed by speakers and performances by members of the Karen community in Queensland. The celebration ended with refreshments prepared by AKO's youth members.
