On 12 August 2017, the Australian Karen Organisation held the 67th Karen Martyrs' Day commemoration service in Victoria. The service is held on this day each year to remember those who gave their lives for the freedom of the Karen people, and to pay tribute to Saw Ba U Gyi, the first president of the Karen National Union, and the leaders who served with him.
The guest speaker was the chairman of the International Karen Organisation, who gave an address of encouragement. Other speakers followed, and youth groups performed songs. Wreaths were laid during the service in honour of the fallen.
The service ended with refreshments. Many members of the Karen community attended to pay their respects to past and present leaders.
